What is Chloramine and Why is it in My Tap Water?

It’s amazing how good intentions can come out so wrong sometimes.  And even though this good intention fixed an earlier problem, the result ends up being just as bad, if not worse, than it was before.  And what’s really rotten, is no one owns up to the fact that the problem is worse.

So here’s what’s coming to, or is already in, your tap water now:  Chloramine.

Chloramine:  How is it used?

Free chlorine has been used for decades in municipal water treatment. It turns out that the combination of chlorine and certain organics in water can produce a new category of dangerous carcinogens called Disinfectant by-Products (DBP). After the serious adverse health effects of DBPs were discovered, the USEPA promulgated the Disinfectant By-Product Rule pertaining to the use of chlorine in drinking water.

To reduce the concentration of Disinfectant by-Products in drinking water, the water industry began to use chloramine (chlorine and ammonia). By reducing the amount of chlorine and replacing it with ammonia, DBP levels dropped. More and more municipalities across the US are transitioning to chloramine in an effort to comply with EPA standards.

What are the Health Effects?

Hospitals and kidney dialysis centers must be alerted when chloramine is used for water supply disinfection. Cases of chloramine-induced hemolytic anemia in patients have been reported when their dialysis water was not appropriately treated. Persons with liver or kidney disease and those with hereditary urea cycle disorders are at increased risk for ammonia toxicity from the consumption of chloraminated water and kidney dialysis patients cannot use chloraminated water in their dialysis machines because it will cause hemolytic anemia.

It has been found that chloraminated water vapor from showers, baths, hot tubs, dishwashers, and other household appliances contains volatilized chemicals that can be inhaled and cause irritation to the respiratory tract. Prolonged chloramine exposure can potentially damage lung mucosa, making the lungs more susceptible to allergens and infections.  Some individual cases have reported light to severe skin reactions ranging from rashes, itching, chapping, cracking, flaking to blistering skin conditions and chloramine has been known to aggravate skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

Is There any Harm from Drinking Chloramines?

Unlike chlorine, chloramine does not rapidly dissipate on standing, nor does it dissipate by boiling.  Drawbacks to the use of chloramine can include potential water quality problems (e.g., nitrification and corrosion) if the municipal or well water treatment process is not carefully controlled and the system’s operational practices are not appropriately adjusted for the new disinfectant.

While chloramination has been recommended by the EPA since the 1990s as a way to lower the level of carcinogenic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) created by chlorination, it has led to unintended consequences, in some cases making the water extremely toxic. Chloramine, like chlorine, are toxic to fish and amphibians at levels used for human drinking water.

How Do I Remove Chloramine from my Drinking Water?

The History of MLM

Ever heard of network marketing or multi-level marketing (MLM)? Probably, but do you know how it originated? You may be surprised to learn how this industry first began.

There was a fellow by the name of Rehnborg who was one of the first to discover the importance of nutrition in our diet. Rehnborg knew that people needed a single simple solution to the complex problem of dietary supplementation.

After years of research Rehnborg came up with the then-revolutionary idea of combining every needed mineral and vitamin into a single product. Thus, the first multi-vitamin was born in 1934. Rehnborg started a company by the name of Nutrilite in 1939 to sell his multi-vitamin to the world.

There was only one problem.

Plastic BPA Information – The List

News of possible health threats associated with plastic bothered Jeanne Haegele of Chicago so much that she has quit using plastic. The 28-year-old marketing coordinator chronicles her efforts online at www.lifelessplastic.blogspot.com. “Plastic is absolutely everywhere – our food is packaged in it, our clothes are often made out of it, and even baby toys are made of plastic,” Haegele says. “It was scary that something that was such a big part of my life might be dangerous.”

Scientists are mostly worried about bisphenol-A or BPA. “It’s an endocrine disruptor and in numerous animal studies it’s been linked to cancer, infertility, obesity and early puberty,” says Anila Jacob, M.D., M.P.H., a senior scientist at the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit research and advocacy organization in Washington, D.C. “The CDC has found this chemical in 93 percent of people they have tested,” she says.

BPA is a chemical used to make polycarbonate plastic or items marked with the number 7 on the bottom. Some plastic dishes, cups, reusable water bottles and baby bottles are made out of polycarbonate. Heating foods in polycarbonate plastic increases the amount of BPA that leaches into food, Jacob says. Frances Beinecke, president of the National Resources Defense Council, an environmental action group, worries about BPA’s possible role in breast cancer. Beinecke, a breast cancer survivor, says BPA is a synthetic form of estrogen, and doctors know estrogen feeds breast cancer. “It ramps up cell division in pre-cancerous cells and it can prompt tumors to metastasize,” she says. “In animal studies, BPA has been found to cause the early onset of puberty and stimulate mammary gland development in females. The estrogen-like properties in BPA are so strong that even when male rodents were exposed to it, they had an increased risk of mammary tumors.” The studies done to date have all been on animals, Jacob says, because it’s difficult to study in humans as we have already been exposed via multiple routes. “We think the animal data is convincing enough that it warrants concern,” Jacob says.

BPA also is used to line the inside of metal food and soda cans and can leach from the can liner into the food. Acidic foods like tomato sauces and soda absorb more BPA. Other plastic containers–like those made with polyvinyl chloride or PVC and marked with the number 3 concern scientists for health and environmental reasons. PVC contains phthalates, softeners need to make the plastic bend and they have been found to interfere with hormonal development. The production of and burning of PVC plastic releases dioxin, a known carcinogen, into the atmosphere.

All food plastic wraps used to be made with PVC, but many large name brands have quit using PVC. However, the cling wrap used for commercial purposes, such as the meat department of your grocery store, often contain phthalates. Gina Solomon, M.D., M.P.H., a senior scientist with the NRDC, suggests checking the date when you buy food wrapped in cling wrap. Buying something recently wrapped is your safest bet, she says.

For its part, the FDA agrees that substances used to make plastics can leach into food. But the agency says it has studied them and found “the levels to be well within the margin of safety based on information available to the agency.”

Safer Plastics

#1 PETE or PET (polyethylene terephthalate)–used for most clear beverage bottles, such as 2-liter soda, cooking oil bottles and peanut butter jars. One of the most commonly recycled plastics on the planet.
#2 HDPE (high-density polyethylene)–used to make most milk jugs.
#4 LDPE (low-density polyethylene)–used in food storage bags, some cling wraps and some squeeze bottles.
#5 PP (polypropylene)–used in opaque, hard containers, including some baby bottles and some cups and bowls. Drinking straws and yogurt containers are sometimes made with this.

Avoid These

#3 PVC (polyvinyl chloride)–used in commercial plastic wraps and salad dressing bottles.
#6 PS (polystyrene)–used in Styrofoam cups, meat trays and “clam-shell”-type containers.
#7 Other (these contain any plastic other than those used in #1-6. Most are polycarbonate which contain BPA)–used in some water bottles, Nalgene water bottles, some baby bottles, and some metal can linings.

Ray Kurzweil (Scientist) Talks about Alkaline, Ionized Water

Question: I have read on the Internet that it is not possible to create alkaline or acid water from pure water and that water that is pure enough to drink can’t be split into alkaline and acid components. Is this true?

Answer: As responsible scientists, we had the same skepticism when we first heard about alkaline water.

Therefore, the first thing we did was to purchase a water alkalinizer as well as an accurate electronic pH meter. We ran tap water with pH 7.1 from our home faucet into the device and found that the water coming out of the alkaline outlet had a pH of 9.5 (indicating very alkaline), while the water from the acid outlet measured pH 4.5 (indicating very acidic).

We repeated this experiment with a variety of tap waters obtaining alkaline outputs with a pH ranging from 9.5 to 9.9. It is true that “pure” or distilled water cannot be ionized. If you were to try to “split” distilled water, it would not work. Tap or spring water, however, has dissolved minerals in it. It’s the minerals in the water; primarily calcium, potassium and magnesium that allow water to be “split” by an electric current into alkaline, “electron-rich” (i.e., containing negatively charged ions that can engage in chemical reactions to provide electrons to positively charged free radicals) and acid, “electron-deficient” components. Individuals who say it is not possible to split tap or spring water are misinformed.

QuestionOne site on the Internet states “Ionized water is nothing more than sales fiction; the term is meaningless to chemists. Most water that is fit for drinking is too un-conductive to undergo significant electrolysis.

Answer:  The above statement is easily shown to be incorrect with a simple pH meter and an electrolysis machine. Most tap waters run through the machine produce highly alkaline water as measured by a pH meter.

Question: Since you advocate drinking alkaline water, why not simply mix something like sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) with water and drink that? There are, in fact, alkaline waters sold that are made by mixing water with bicarbonate. Wouldn’t that work as well and be much less expensive than a water alkalinizer?

Answer:  There are more benefits to “alkaline water” than simply the alkalinity or pH. The most important feature of alkaline water produced by a water alkalinizer is its oxidation reduction potential (ORP). Water with a high negative ORP is of particular value in its ability to neutralize oxygen free radicals.

ORP can also be directly tested using an ORP sensor and meter. We have conducted these experiments as well. We found that water coming directly from the tap had an ORP of +290mV, while the water coming out of the water alkalinizer had a negative ORP. The more negative the ORP of a substance (that is, the higher its negative ORP), the more likely it is to engage in chemical reactions that donate electrons. These electrons are immediately available to engage in reactions that neutralize positively charged free radicals. This is the key benefit of water produced by a water alkalinizer that is not available by simply drinking water than has had some bicarb or other compounds dissolved in it to make it alkaline.

Although water mixed with bicarbonate is indeed alkaline, it does not have a negative ORP; rather it has a positive ORP, meaning that it is unable to neutralize dangerous oxygen free radicals. Alkaline water produced by running tap water through an electrolysis machine does have a high negative ORP, meaning that it does have the ability to neutralize oxygen free radicals. We have confirmed these ORP measurements through our direct tests.

Question: OK, why is it important to drink alkaline water with a high negative ORP?

Answer: All chemical reactions occur with the transfer of electrons. Negatively charged entities are said to be reducing agents, meaning they are relatively electron rich and are able to donate electrons, reducing the charge of the entity with which they react. Relatively electron-poor entities are referred to as oxidizing agents, meaning they tend to pull electrons away. Thus, each substance in our body may act as either an oxidizing or reducing agent.

However, not just any negatively charged ion will be able to engage in the specific chemical reactions needed to neutralize oxygen free radicals. The HCO3- (bicarbonate) ions in alkaline bicarb water do not have this potential, whereas the OH- and mineral-rich water coming from an electrolysis machine (from tap water) does have this potential. That is implied in the negative value of the “oxidation reduction potential.”

Free radicals are among the most damaging molecules in the body and are highly unstable molecules that are oxidizing agents and are electron deficient. They are a principal cause of damage and disease in the body. Oxygen free radicals contribute significantly to a broad variety of harmful conditions in the body ranging from life-threatening conditions such as heart disease, stroke and cancer, to less severe conditions such as sunburns, arthritis, cataracts, and many others. Free radicals MUST get electrons from somewhere and will steal them from whatever molecules are around, including normal, healthy tissues.

Damage to tissues results when free radicals strip these electrons from healthy cells. If the damage goes on unchecked, this will lead to disease. For example, the oxidation of LDL cholesterol particles in arterial walls by free radicals triggers an immune system response that results in atherosclerosis, the principal cause of heart disease. The negative ions in alkaline water from an electrolysis machine are a rich source of electrons that can be donated to these free radicals in the body, neutralizing them and stopping them from damaging healthy tissues.

Specifically, these ions have the potential to engage in the chemical reactions necessary to neutralize oxygen free radicals.

Vitamin C and E, grape seed extract and alpha lipoic acid, for example, are all powerful electron donors. The vegetable-rich diet we recommend is alkaline and helps donate electrons to the body. Alkaline, electron-rich water falls in the same category. It can help with your body’s need for electrons to counteract free radicals.

Interestingly, we also tested vegetable juice with the ORP meter and found that it also has a high negative ORP, meaning that it is able to neutralize oxygen free radicals. So at least one of the important benefits of eating vegetables can be obtained from drinking the high negative ORP alkaline water from an electrolysis machine.

Another benefit of drinking alkaline water is that it assists in the absorption of minerals. We know that if the body is not absorbing enough minerals, it will rob minerals from the body’s mineral reserves, chiefly calcium from the bones.

It is well known that many chronic diseases result in excess acidity of the body (metabolic acidosis). We also know that the body tends to become more acidic due to modern dietary habits and lifestyles and the aging process itself. By drinking high negative ORP alkaline water, you combat metabolic acidosis and improve absorption of nutrients.

The blood is carefully buffered to keep it in a narrow range between pH 7.35 to 7.45. The body keeps blood pH stable by utilizing alkaline buffers, chiefly bicarbonate, to neutralize acidic liquids (such as colas, which have a pH as low as 2.5) and other acidic products and byproducts.

But as the blood stream receives these acidic substances, the alkaline buffers get used up.

Drinking alkaline water helps reduce the burden on the limited alkaline buffers which are needed for the body’s natural detoxification processes.

Question: Is there research that actually shows the benefits of drinking alkaline water?

Answer: A number of studies are summarized below. One study described below suggests that alkaline water encourages “friendly” anaerobic microflora in the human intestinal tract, and discourages “unfriendly” aerobic organisms. The researcher (see Vorobjeva NV below) writes:

“Many diseases of the intestine are due to a disturbance in the balance of the microorganisms inhabiting the gut. The treatment of such diseases involves the restoration of the quantity and/or balance of residential microflora in the intestinal tract. It is known that aerobes and anaerobes grow at different oxidation-reduction potentials (ORP). The former require positive E(h) values up to +400 mV. Anaerobes do not grow unless the E(h) value is negative between -300 and -400 mV. In this work, it is suggested that prerequisite for the recovery and maintenance of obligatory anaerobic microflora in the intestinal tract is a negative ORP value of the intestinal milieu. Electrolyzed reducing water with E(h) values between 0 and -300 mV produced in electrolysis devices possesses this property. Drinking such water favours the growth of residential microflora in the gut. A sufficient array of data confirms this idea.”

Dr. Grossman has also had many of his patients report of health benefits they have experienced from drinking alkaline electron-rich water.

Question: How can alkaline water with a pH of 9 or 10 be expected to affect the body when the pH of the stomach is 2 or less?

Answer: It is important to remember that large amounts of hydrochloric acid are present in the stomach primarily when food is there. There is only a small amount of acid in stomach when it is empty, and this can be easily overcome when alkaline electron-rich water is consumed.

Therefore, in order to gain maximum benefit, we recommend drinking alkaline water in-between meals. Water consumed between meals will very quickly pass through the stomach and the GI tract.

Aging and Reverse Aging

Life is precious.  But many of us take it for granted that we’re going to live long, healthy lives.  Unfortunately, depending on your lifestyle, the aging process begins to catch up with you sometimes a bit sooner than you’d like.  Many people begin to feel a little arthritis setting in, maybe some lower back pain, etc, etc…  Before you know it, life just doesn’t seem fun anymore due to some sort of pain or illness.

Here is what occurs in the aging process and more importantly, here’s how we can substantially slow it down.

Every living cell in our body creates waste product.  Nutrients from our food is delivered to our cells and the cells, in combination with oxygen, burn these nutrients to produce energy for us to live.  In exchange for energy, these burned off nutrients become waste product.  The way we know that food is either good or bad for you is by the quantity and quality of waste product that is generated.

On a typical pH chart, the scale usually runs from 3.0 – 11.0 pH, with 7.0 pH being neutral.  Anything under 7.0 is considered acidic; anything over 7.0 is considered alkaline.  All waste product is acidic.  Because our artery bloodstream value is slightly alkaline at 7.365 and must remain so to remain healthy, all waste product must be expelled from our blood and bodies.

Aging process, simply defined, is the accumulation of non-disposed acidic wastes within our bodies.  If the body is not able to expel 100% of waste product, the body will protect itself by storing this waste somewhere.   Where does it go?  It becomes solid waste material such as cholesterol, fatty acid, uric acid, kidney stones, urates, phosphates, sulphates and plaque build-up on artery and digestive walls.  All of this build-up is acidic, toxic and the more that is accumulated, the more prone you become to sickness and disease.

Chemically speaking; knowing that acid dissolves alkaline build-up and alkaline dissolves acidic build-up, it stands to reason that drinking alkaline, ionized water (if consumed regularly) will gradually and substantially reduce the amount of accumulated, built-up acidic waste stored in your body.  Also, since the accumulation of acid waste is aging, the reduction of acid waste may be considered reverse aging.

Water ionizers have been available in Japan and South Korea now for over 30 years.  It is reported that one in every 5 homes in Japan has an ionizer (it’s 1 in 10 in South Korea) and many believe this is a major reason Japan is consistently ranked in the top 5 countries for longevity.  Water ionizers that produce alkaline, ionized water are even considered to be medical devices by the Japanese government.

Though water ionizer technology has been around this long in Asia, it was only introduced into the United States roughly about 10 years ago.  Fortunately for us here in the West, a few new companies have come along to help spread the word on the health benefits of drinking this water.  Though drinking alkaline, ionized water is not officially considered to be a medicinal cure for treating any disease, there are many reports of natural health improvement of all sorts of ailments by those who drink it.

“What is it?” I asked.  “It’s a water ionizer,” was the reply.  “What the heck is a water ionizer and why are they showing this thing to me?”

That was me two years ago being introduced to something called a water ionizer after telling my friend about my aching back.  He said, “Your back hurts?  Drink some of this water!”  He then explained, a water ionizer is a machine that 1) purifies tap water, 2) alkalizes the water, and 3) ionizes the water.  Ok, the purification part I get, but why is drinking alkaline water and ionized water so important?  I’ve since found out it’s exactly what our bodies are meant to have to remain healthy.

Ever heard of the magical healing waters of Tlacote, Mexico; Nordenau, Germany; or Nadana village, India? If you have then you’ll know that between 5,000 to 10,000 people, come from as far as Russia to go and stand in a daily queue for their share of this so-called healing water, as the water is claimed to cure anything from cancer to obesity. Whilst in Germany, scientific tests were carried out on Nordenau’s water and proved that 30% of people with ailments who consumed the water were totally healed, and 28% saw a marked improvement in their condition.

According to their research, one major conclusion was the healing power of the water came down to a simple property; the Negative Hydrogen Ion (OH-).

The negative hydrogen ion seems to be a powerful life-sustaining “antioxidant”.  It is found in natural raw foods and ancient water sources such as glacial water run-offs, particular wells, springs and lakes.  What’s special about water ionizers is they match the properties of natural occuring running water.  That is, they match the natural water that is found – gushing down high-altitutde waterfalls from glaciers or mountains, where through velocity, gravity and violent impact, a natural ionization of the water occurs whilst absorbing minerals at the same time.

In a water ionizer, the water comes straight from the tap, is first purified through the unit’s filter(s) then goes through a process called electrolysis.  Electrolysis is the process of running a single stream of water past two magnetically charged, electrified metal plates.  This has the effect of splitting the single stream of water into two seperate, now chemically changed streams.  That is, a normal H2O molecule is split into two individual, seperate molecules.  An OH- (the “antioxidant”) molecule and an H+ (acidic “oxidizing”) molecule.

You may know, a “free-radical” is a molecule with an extra +charged ion.  This extra +ion causes “oxidation”.  Oxidation causes pre-mature aging.  Think of an apple turning brown after it has been split open and exposed to the air.  Or more basic, oxidation = rust.  Most bottled waters out on the market have a +charged ion property to it.  Therefore, if you drink a +charged water, you are in a sense, rusting (oxidizing) the inside of your body.  The more oxidative (or “acidic”) your body, the more prone you are to disease and sickness.

Oppositely, by drinking a -charged water, the extra -ion goes in search of a +ion to latch onto to make itself a nuetral and natural molecule again and this “anti-oxidant”, -ion in turn has the effect of mitigating acidic (toxic) properties in your body.  Since the anti-oxidant -ion mitages the premature aging effect an oxidant (+charged) ion has, many call ionized water anti-aging.

We’re all made out of water.  Therefore, putting the right type of water into your body is essential to maintaing good and proper health.  Using a ionized water machine, is one way to help keep your body as healthy as possible.

Great Health Begins With Restructured, Alkaline, Ionized Water

One of the hottest and most controversial topics today is WATER. Almost everyone is talking about water and there is a lot of confusion concerning it. Water quality is one of the main concerns, but taste has a lot to do with it as well. A recent City of Winter Park Water Quality Report mentioned the possible health risk “for people that have undergone organ transplants, cancer patients on certain drugs, some elderly people, infants and people with HIV/Aids or other immune systems disorders from drinking municipal water.” This warning comes from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and is effective for all municipal water systems. Well, if this is the state of your public water systems, what is a person to do? Even with good health, you should not challenge your immune system every time you go to the tap for a drink of water.

Restructured Alkaline, Ionized water may well be the best element or supplement you can put in your body! The Japanese have researched this for over forty years and have found that drinking restructured alkaline water can relieve or reduce the three main causes for sickness, disease and pre-mature aging: Acidosis, Dehydration, and Free Radicals.

Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Well it can be if you do the right things. After all, the country of Japan ranks much higher on the World Health Organization’s health scale than the United States. Let’s take one condition at a time and briefly explain it.

Acidosis:

Almost any health care provider, alternative or mainstream, will agree that most health problems, including cancer, begin in an acid environment within the body. Many lay people already know this. What most people don’t know is that if your pH drops below 5.8 you cannot absorb vitamins A, B, E, F, and K. Nor can you absorb valuable minerals like sulphur, potassium, calcium, vanadium, chromium, iron, or zinc. This is irrelevant of how much of these supplements you ingest. Give it some thought, you may literally be flushing huge amounts of money down the toilet, so to speak. The majority of people we check have a urine pH below 5.8 and don’t realize they are wasting their money on supplements. Restructured alkaline water is the fastest and most efficient way to alkalize your body. We are meant to be alkaline on the inside of our bodies. If you have any doubt about this I suggest you read “Alkalize or Die” by Dr. Theodore A. Baroody, available in most health stores.

Dehydration:

Estimates show that as high as 90 percent of the population is dehydrated, and they don’t even know it. Research has proven a body needs one-half of its weight in fluid ounces of water per day to remain properly hydrated. Dehydration has been linked to many of our modern diseases, too numerous to mention here. For detailed research on this fact you should read Your Body’s Many Cries for Water by F. Batmanghelidj, M.D. This book will help you understand the vital importance of water.

All water does not hydrate efficiently.  Distilled water, for example, is dead and devoid of all minerals. It is extremely acidic and will tend to dehydrate you. The average pH of distilled water is 4.5, this is almost 1000 times more acidic than your blood, which is a pH of 7.3. Distilled water must be neutralized within the body, and as a result if there is insufficient calcium in the diet, it is leeched from other sources of calcium within the body. Reverse Osmosis water has many of the same problems, no minerals and an average pH of 5, more than 100 times more acidic than your blood. Remember that most bottled water and even some purified spring water use reverse osmosis in their bottling process.

Free Radicals:

Determined to be the major cause of premature aging, free radicals are atoms, ions, and molecules derived from oxygen that cause cellular damage within the body. Free radicals are highly reactive because they are missing an electron to balance it. They freely and randomly seek out available molecular electrons to bond to in the body, causing cellular structure damage. This damage contributes to aging and disease.

The body’s defense system for free radicals is antioxidants. Antioxidants act as neutralizing agents within the body. They supply the necessary electron bond for the highly reactive free radical thus blocking damage to cells within the body. Antioxidants are supplied by our diet and can be fortified by additional supplementation. Substantial research indicates the relationship between antioxidants and the strength of the immune system. Restructured alkaline, ionized water functions as a super liquid antioxidant! MLM Success for 2010 – 7 Habits of Those who are Successful

Your MLM success (or, your success in general business) begins with employing 7 successful habits of those who are successful.  Simply put, if you do what those who are successful do, you in turn, will become successful.  This is some great information from a leader in the sales industry; Ms. Erica Combs.

Success Habit Number 1:
Trustworthy Communication Between You and Your Lead – People will buy from you if they trust you.  You do not require tricks, gimmicks or short cuts, just a clear message for why someone can trust you to do business with.  Communicate the value you bring to the market and relay that value with pride and passion about your product.  Are these methods true to your integrity?  They have to be.  Tricks or shortcuts will not resonate properly with the customer.  Be confident with your skills and products and be responsible for assisting them in finding a solution for what they are looking for.  Point them in the direction they are looking towards and develop a reputation on following through on what you say.

Success Habit Number 2:
Command the Conversation – Decide and know where your conversation is going.  Steer the dialog and be conciously aware about where you both are in the sales process.  Listen intently and find what opportunity there is to fill their need.  Create service and value for yourself by showing them you care.  Ask questions and get them involved, but don’t get sucked into a drawn out, limbo, no result phone call.  Keep it flowing and controlled.  Always state your name, where you’re calling from and the purpose of your call.  Ask them if they are still open to the opportunity to learn more and find out if they are legitimate.  If they come back fired up, excellent.  If they respond with, “This sounds good, but…”, don’t focus on the objection after the but.  Steer the conversation back to what it was that initially appealed to them about the info they received.  Get it back to why they signed up and you’ll have a much greater opportunity to close the deal by keeping the conversation positive.

Success Habit Number 3:
Finding Key Requirements – Put another way, who will buy from me and WHY?  Also, educate yourself on your prospect’s point of view.  Why does what you have work for them and why are you the best to give it to them versus someone else?  There’s no need to go into all the facts and figures and details here, just keep it basic.  Keep them fired up for contacting you because 85% of the populace makes purchases based on emotions.  Steering them into mundane numbers too fast is boring.  Keep them recognizing the rewards and the positive outcome for their choice early on and you’ll be much more apt to gain them as a customer.

Success Habit Number 4:
Ask for the Next Appointment During the First One – As you close your first conversation, follow-up is critical.  Ask for the best time to contact them again and do so within 24 – 48 hours of the initial conversation.  Always give them a choice of two times (“How’s Tuesday?  Is the morning or the afternoon better for you?”) and LISTEN to their voice when they answer to certify them as a go-getter, a maybe or not a match.

Success Habit Number 5:
Ask for Referrals – If Susie Homemaker down the street knows that her buddy Judy, who you have a great working relationship with likes you and your product, it’s practically a done deal.  Always ask your customer if they know of someone who would value your product and or service as much as they do.

Success Habit Number 6:
Begin Early and Stay Late – Who is typically the first one in the office?  The boss.  Have passion for your work and your service and you won’t mind the extra time you’re giving to your vocation.  Besides, it’ll probably pay off!

Success Habit Number 7:
Maintain Your Sense of Humor – Create levity with yourself and maintain a positive image, not just with your clients, but with yourself.  Give yourself permission to give yourself a break now and then and chuckle.  Ask yourself, who are those you’re attracted to?  The person that has a positive attitude that makes you laugh laughing at themselves or someone who beats themselves up emotionally and drags everyone down with them.  Laugh it off, brush it off, breathe and dive back in.
